get the picture?... possible scenarios:

1. joe excels in science, he's planning a career in it... his hs pace seems too slow for him... he's really interested in blahblahb... that isn't offered in the district.
this year joe is taking blabhlh from soars online to get his req credits
joes is also taking blahblah from co online program
next year joe is planning to take blah blah from mit/
his senior year, joe is planning to create his own course and work with the blahblah prof/program at csu

2. pete struggles in math, he's currently enrolled in credit recovery. his facilitator has helped him discover his love for blahblah, so once pete finishes cr - he is planning to design a course in ..

3. sally wants to take mandarin, she looked into the offering of it through co online, but decided she would prefer a more culturally indepth course... she is designing her own course with the help of her facilitator.

4. kait is very active... she has trouble focusing in any class on any topic. she loves sports... she is going to try the eng/sport course.. where all her seat time in the room will be on a stationary bike.

NOTES/RESOURCES:

ground zero and beginnings.. a school within a school: Academy of Discovery via Ben Wilkoff in Highlands Ranch Colorado.. and the Science Leadership Academy in Philly

why should students go to class
- Ben Wilkoff

Explore, Create, Share, -A lecture is a lecture - it is your time, make sure you use it wisely...
This mashup of a commercial questions the traditional and conventional uses of technology for teaching. It argues that technology changes everything, what we teach and how we teach.

good points... but it is a lecture on the learner's time.. in snippets, 10 times over,... so it is better... more can be absorbed.
ie: Study of college kids with podcasts
those that got straight lecture with notes score 61% on test
those that got lecture via podcast without taking notes score 71% on test
those that got lecture via podcast and took notes score 77% on test

but - let's do explore... what more does web access bring us...

students from SLA Sience Leadership Academy in Philly.. on what school should be..
As far as I can tell I have not mentioned how this school I speak of would look like. It has not been mentioned because when it truly comes down to it students don’t need to walk the halls of buildings.
Without designing ourselves as them... why not take this as a really good model and start moving..

  • * [Untitled]
    1. 1 student and 1 adult from each building - with a flip video
    2. weekly assign: 1 clip of students/teachers modeling *rich activity via web access.
    3. links to [Untitled] will be updated weekly with these clips [by graham at tv, ? at lhs, ? at mv, ? at bhs]
    4. [Untitled]
will be posted on the tsd page of facebook, each school site, and the tsd site.
*Show and tell of only positives - and only of things we wouldn't be able to do w/o rich web use, new learning spaces, etc.
Design is a refrigerator with student papers posted on it. Each paper links to a video from #2 above.

goal - community requesting
1. rich web use (ie: access at school for networking people and info)
and
2. wise money spending (ie: nothing one-size fits all... no whole district purchases... purchase by "need for learning" basis per site or class planning to use it efficiently, this includes text books, prom boards, calcs, etc.)
3. new learning spaces (ie: seat time, the value of being together in a room)
